Calibrating Talent and Promotion Cases
Role-play a talent review meeting between two directors in London or Chicago. Discuss why a high-performing manager was passed over for promotion, evaluate their nine-box grid placement, and debate whether they belong on the leadership or specialist track.
• Use preparatory 'it' structures (e.g. 'We consider it essential to...') when discussing promotion criteria.
• Incorporate advanced vocabulary such as 'calibration session', 'flight risk', and 'invisible work'.
• Apply stance adverbials (e.g. 'Tellingly', 'Frankly') to express opinions on employee performance.
Memo to the Promotion Committee
Write an internal memo (80–120 words) to the executive promotion committee in New York or London. Propose a promotion case for a high-potential employee, highlighting their visible impact, addressing potential career plateaus, and utilizing preparatory 'it' structures.
• Make it clear that the candidate exceeds all competency framework benchmarks.
• Use complex prepositions like 'in light of' or 'with regard to' for formal tone.
• Ensure all city and company references remain strictly within the USA or the UK.
