Discussing Wedding Disasters
Work with a partner. Talk about a time when an important event or wedding went wrong. Discuss what went wrong, who was to blame, and how people managed to laugh it off or rescue the day.
• Describe a wedding disaster you heard about or experienced in a US or UK city.
• Discuss what the organisers were supposed to do versus what actually happened.
• Use past modals of necessity and criticism to evaluate the choices made (e.g., 'They needn't have worried', 'He ought to have checked').
• Share your advice on how to keep calm and laugh off unexpected problems.
An Apology Letter from a Caterer
Write an email (60–100 words) from a catering company in Chicago to a couple whose wedding reception dinner was delayed due to traffic. Apologize for the inconvenience and explain what went wrong.
• Use formal nominalisation (e.g., 'our failure to deliver', 'the delay').
• Include past modals of criticism or obligation to explain the situation ('our driver was supposed to take...').
• Offer a suitable compensation or compromise to keep the peace.
