In Defense of Good Manners

Frankly speaking, we've grown far too comfortable with casual rudeness in our daily lives. Whenever someone grabs a table without waiting or ignores a basic courtesy, we shrug it off as modern efficiency. Yet manners are nothing less than applied empathy, a way of navigating shared spaces without leaving wreckage behind.

Ironically, the very people who champion authenticity often treat basic etiquette with utter disdain. They view holding the door or keeping phones off the table at dinner as oppressive social constructs rather than acts of simple kindness. But true freedom doesn't mean ignoring everyone else in the room.

Tellingly, our obsession with personal regeneration and urban gentrification has created cities full of sleek bypasses and quiet cafes where people stare silently into glowing screens. We measure our life satisfaction through the hedonic treadmill of productivity apps and gratitude journals, completely forgetting the person standing right beside us.

Understandably, navigating this landscape feels exhausting at times. Between dodging queue-jumpers at the local deli and dealing with guests who RSVP late to important gatherings, it is easy to become cynical. We've all felt put out when our careful planning is met with total indifference from friends or colleagues.

Technically speaking, an etiquette blunder won't land you in prison, but it slowly erodes the fabric of our communities. From a legal standpoint, you are free to ignore every social norm in the book, but from a human standpoint, doing so leaves everyone a little colder and a little more isolated.

We need to stop treating well-mannered behavior as old-fashioned snobbery. A well-placed social grace can transform a tense encounter into a moment of shared warmth. It isn't about standing on ceremony or knowing which fork to use; it is about making others feel seen and valued in a crowded world.

Of course, nobody is immune to lapses in judgment. We have all experienced that rude awakening when we realize our own behavior fell woefully short of the mark. Sometimes we give someone the cold shoulder simply because we're having a stressful Tuesday afternoon at the office.

Boorish habits tend to creep up on us when we least expect them. If you fail to mind your p's and q's, you might find yourself surrounded by people who have simply stopped caring. Chivalry and common decency require constant practice, much like learning an instrument or maintaining a garden.

Looking back at my own history, I certainly haven't always lived up to these lofty ideals. I used to think that being fiercely independent meant never having to apologize for my sharp tongue or my hurried dismissals of ordinary human warmth.

The rudest thing I ever did happened in Austin back in the autumn of twenty-eighteen, when an elderly neighbor brought me a homemade pie to welcome me to the street. I was rushing to finish a frantic work deadline, took the dish without looking her up, and mumbled something ungracious before shutting the door in her face. I never thanked her, I never wrote a note, and she moved away the following spring. To this day, that unmailed apology is the debt I still owe.
