Speak and write

Resolving Triage Disagreements: The Mimics Challenge

Role-play a conversation between a senior resident and a clinical lead in a busy Denver hospital. One of you wants to discharge an elderly patient with vague abdominal pain, while the other suspects an atypical presentation of an aortic dissection and wants to perform further tests.

• Use concession linkers (e.g., 'Much as I understand the pressure of waiting times...') to acknowledge your colleague's concerns.
• Discuss the risk of anchoring bias and diagnostic momentum in this specific case.
• Formulate a plan that satisfies both clinical safety and hospital capacity.

Case Reflection: Avoiding Diagnostic Momentum

Write a short reflective email (80-120 words) to your clinical lead in Boston regarding an atypical presentation that almost slipped under the radar last week. Explain what happened, using at least two contrast/concession linkers.

• Clearly describe the patient's vague symptoms and the final correct diagnosis.
• Use 'although' or 'despite' to contrast the initial triage notes with the actual clinical outcome.
• Suggest one quality improvement measure to prevent similar errors in the future.
