Consultation Role-Play
Work with a partner. One of you is a gastroenterologist at St Mary's Clinic in London, and the other is a corporate lawyer presenting with severe stomach pain. Discuss what the patient had been doing and taking before the consultation.
• Ask the patient what symptoms they had been experiencing before visiting the clinic.
• Inquire about any over-the-counter painkillers or herbal remedies they had been taking.
• Discuss lifestyle factors like working long hours in London and experiencing heartburn.
• Propose an initial assessment and mention the possibility of an endoscopy.
Clinical Case Summary
Write a short clinical email (40-120 words) to a colleague at Oxford Hospital summarizing a patient's history of gastrointestinal bleeding, previous painkiller use, and current working diagnosis.
• Use the past perfect continuous to describe habits before admission (e.g. had been taking ibuprofen).
• Include key findings like iron deficiency anemia and black stools.
• Keep the tone professional and concise, suitable for hospital correspondence in the UK.
