The One-to-One is Not a Status Meeting
Taylor: Welcome back to our management column. Today we are tackling the most misunderstood calendar invite in the modern corporate world: the regular check-in.
Taylor: Many first-time managers treat these recurring slots as mere status updates, where they grill team members on weekly metrics. This approach kills trust-building instantly.
Taylor: A proper one-to-one is not a reporting session for the manager. It is a dedicated space for the employee to open up, air concerns, and discuss career ambitions without fear.
Taylor: When you step into a role of leadership, your primary duty is to listen more than you speak. If you dominate the conversation, your team members will start holding back.
Taylor: Matt, our Senior Operations Lead in Seattle, always says that the agenda owner must be the employee, not the manager. Let them bring the topics that truly matter to them.
Taylor: You need to read between the lines when someone says everything is fine. Often, unspoken tension lingers beneath the surface, and a good manager knows how to spot it.
Taylor: Scott, our VP of Finance in Chicago, was supposed to run a training session on this exact topic last month, but he caught a severe flu and had to cancel at short notice.
Taylor: He was going to explain how to handle difficult employees who refuse to come to the point during their check-ins, preferring instead to go off topic for twenty minutes.
Taylor: That brings me to a shameful confession from my own early days as a manager at Apex Solutions in Boston. I was about to preach active listening to my team.
Taylor: I was to deliver a masterclass on effective communication, but during my very first review with a junior analyst, I talked continuously for twenty-eight of the thirty minutes allotted.
Taylor: I gave no heads-up, ignored all listening skills, and left my poor colleague zero time to raise a sensitive topic. Learn from my past mistakes and let your people speak.
