Grammar: Unreal Past — Building trust in teams

Unreal Past

  • We use the past tense forms to talk about present or future hypothetical situations, preferences, and imaginary scenarios. This helps us express what we wish were true or how things should ideally be.
  • Structure
  • Function
  • Example
  • It's (high) time + past
  • Saying that something should be done immediately
  • It is high time we built trust in the Seattle office.
  • Would rather + subject + past
  • Expressing a preference for someone else's action
  • I would rather you spoke your mind during meetings.
  • As if / as though + past
  • Describing an imaginary manner or situation
  • Mark acted as though he owned the entire Boston firm.
  • Suppose / What if + past
  • Imagining a hypothetical scenario and its results
  • What if we allowed junior staff to challenge the boss?
  • Remember
  • Use past simple or past continuous after 'it's time', 'would rather', 'as if', and 'suppose' to refer to the present or future.
  • Use 'were' instead of 'was' for all subjects in formal unreal past contexts (e.g., 'as if she were').
  • When using 'would rather' with the same subject, use the bare infinitive instead of the past tense.
  • Examples
  • It's time the Chicago team stopped a blame culture.
  • She talks about psychological safety as if it were easy to achieve.
  • Suppose we removed fear of failure in our New York branch?
  • I would rather you didn't shoot down ideas so quickly.
