Confessions from the Edge: Why I Love Working Here

It is high time I shared a story about what true psychological safety actually looks like in our Manchester office. Last Tuesday, I made a catastrophic error during a high-stakes presentation to Apex Global, which happens to be our largest corporate client by far.

I miscalculated the delivery timeline by three months, and as a result, they walked out of the boardroom and cancelled our multi-million pound contract on the spot. My stomach dropped, and I felt as though my career at the firm was completely over.

Back at my desk, I prepared to pack my belongings because I was certain a toxic blame culture would destroy me. I kept thinking that someone would surely shoot down my ideas and belittle my incompetence in front of the entire senior leadership team.

Instead, my direct manager Noah walked over to my desk, looked at me with absolute candour, and gave me the benefit of the doubt. He did not raise his voice or show any anger about the lost revenue.

Noah simply asked me to own up to what happened and explain the root cause of the miscalculation. He told me it was safe to fail here, provided that we analysed the breakdown together and learned from mistakes.

Rachel, our VP of operations, joined us a few minutes later and supported us without any personality clash or unnecessary drama. She reminded everyone that true autonomy means having decision rights and authority, which inevitably comes with real risk.

Instead of making me stay silent, they encouraged me to speak my mind about the software tools we used for tracking project deadlines. They listened with total openness and made sure I felt heard throughout the difficult post-mortem meeting.

We spent the afternoon handing over responsibility for client communications while maintaining my approachability with the remaining accounts. Nobody rubbed me up the wrong way or made me feel like an outsider during the crisis.

It was as though the entire department treated the failure as a collective learning experience rather than an excuse to point fingers. That level of psychological safety completely transformed how I view my role in this organisation.

What if every company operated with that much empathy and trust? Well, the best part of this story is that Noah was officially promoted to Chief Executive Officer this morning.
