Discussing Expensive Hobbies
Work with a partner. Discuss a costly hobby you have or would like to have. Talk about the gear, whether it is worth every penny, and how you justify the cost.

• Have you ever splashed out on equipment that turned out to be a money pit?
• How do enthusiasts justify spending a fortune on vintage cars or sailing?
• Do you think it is possible to enjoy a great hobby without breaking the bank?
An Email to a Friend
Write an email to a friend in Chicago (80–120 words) explaining a new hobby you have taken up, mentioning the cost of the equipment, and using at least two contrast linkers (e.g., although, despite).
• Use contrast words like 'although', 'even though', or 'despite' to balance the high cost with your enjoyment.
• Include vocabulary from the lesson such as 'splash out', 'gear', and 'worth every penny'.
• Check that your tone is friendly and natural for an upper-intermediate level.
