Role-play: The Career Trajectory Discussion
Role-play a one-on-one meeting between a senior software engineer (who wants more leadership opportunities) and an engineering manager in Chicago. The manager wants to understand the engineer's career aspirations but needs to ensure they don't neglect their current hands-on tasks.
• Ask open-ended questions about career aspirations and future plans.
• Use future-in-the-past structures to discuss previous plans that changed (e.g., 'I was going to...').
• Air any concerns about the current project workload and potential bottlenecks in a constructive way.
Setting the Agenda for our One-on-One
Write a short message (40–120 words) to your manager in San Francisco to prepare for your upcoming recurring one-on-one. Suggest at least two talking points and give them a heads-up about a concern you want to air.
• Mention a specific agenda item related to your career trajectory or aspirations.
• Use 'I was going to...' or another future-in-the-past structure to reference a past project idea.
• Keep the tone professional and invite them to pick your brain on a recent technical solution.
