Grammar: Contrast and Concession — Monolith or microservices?

Contrast and Concession

  • Contrast and concession linkers help you compare opposite ideas or show surprising results. They are essential for debating architectural choices, such as choosing between a monolith and microservices. Mastering these linkers allows you to frame your arguments professionally.
  • Linker
  • Grammatical Structure
  • Example Sentence
  • Although / Even though
  • Followed by a clause (subject + verb)
  • Even though the monolithic system is old, it runs efficiently in London.
  • Despite / In spite of
  • Followed by a noun, pronoun, or -ing verb
  • Despite having high network latency, the Boston team prefers microservices.
  • Whereas / While
  • Used to show a direct contrast between two things
  • Our Dallas office uses AWS, whereas our Seattle team prefers Azure.
  • Nevertheless
  • Adverb starting a new sentence (with a comma)
  • The migration is risky. Nevertheless, Denver must proceed with it.
  • Much as
  • Followed by a clause (means 'even though I like/want')
  • Much as I want a service mesh, Chicago cannot afford it this quarter.
  • Remember
  • Use 'although' and 'even though' to introduce a clause that makes the main clause seem surprising.
  • Always follow 'despite' and 'in spite of' with a noun phrase or a gerund (-ing), never a subject + verb clause.
  • Use 'whereas' and 'while' to balance two opposing points or compare different approaches directly.
  • Use 'nevertheless' as a transition word at the start of a new sentence to show contrast with the previous sentence.
  • Use 'much as' to express a strong feeling or desire that is immediately contrasted with a practical limitation.
  • Examples
  • In spite of the high cost, our New York office decided to decompose the platform.
  • Although we defined clear service boundaries, some modules are still tightly coupled.
  • Denver relies heavily on a modular monolith, whereas London has migrated fully to microservices.
  • Much as we appreciate the benefits of domain-driven design, it takes a long time to implement.
  • Common mistakes
  • Despite we had a great team in Denver, we failed to untangle the system.
  • Despite having a great team in Denver, we failed to untangle the system.
  • Although the high operational complexity, they chose microservices in Austin.
  • Despite the high operational complexity, they chose microservices in Austin.
