Investigating a Server Incident
Work with a partner. Discuss a major server failure that happened yesterday in your company's London office. Use modals of deduction (must have, might have, can't have) to guess what caused the crash based on the audit logs.
• Discuss who had admin rights to the production server yesterday.
• Debate whether the deletion of the database was accidental or deliberate.
• Explain why someone couldn't have accessed the restricted folder without a password.
• Decide whose oversight caused the system failure.
Incident Report Message
Write a short message (40–120 words) to your team lead in Bristol explaining what you think happened during the server outage last Friday. Use past modals of deduction to present your theories.
• State what must have happened based on the error logs.
• Mention what might have caused the spike in traffic.
• Explain why certain team members couldn't have been responsible.
