Grammar: Past Perfect Continuous — The fatigue investigation

Past Perfect Continuous

  • We use the past perfect continuous to talk about an action that was happening continuously in the past before another action or time. It is useful in logistics investigations to explain why a driver was tired or how long an event had been developing before an incident occurred.
  • Subject
  • Had / Had not been + -ing
  • Rest of sentence
  • The driver
  • had been driving
  • for nine hours when he felt sleepy.
  • They
  • had not been resting
  • properly before their next shift.
  • How long had he
  • been working
  • before the lane departure happened?
  • Remember
  • Use 'had been + verb-ing' to describe an ongoing action that happened before a specific point in the past.
  • Use this tense to show the cause or explanation of a past situation or incident.
  • Do not use continuous tenses with state verbs like 'know', 'belong', or 'need'.
  • Examples
  • When the collision occurred, John had been driving tired for over six hours.
  • Melissa noticed that the truck had been drifting across lanes before the near miss.
  • The dispatcher had been checking ELD data all morning before she found the error.
