Taking a History Role-Play
Work with a partner. One student plays a doctor at Boston General Hospital, and the other plays a patient coming in with sudden abdominal pain. Practice using open questions, indirect questions, and exploring aggravating factors.
• Greet the patient warmly and establish good professional rapport.
• Ask indirect questions to find out when the pain started in Boston.
• Explore relieving and aggravating factors using clear follow-up questions.
• Summarize the history back to the patient before concluding.
Clinical Handover Message
Write a short electronic handover message (50–100 words) for the incoming physician at Seattle Grace Hospital, summarizing a patient's presenting complaint, past medical history, and social history.
• Use indirect questions or formal statements for clear clinical updates.
• Include key details about drug history and lifestyle factors.
