A Farewell Letter to the Next Developer
Dear Tyler, whoever is reading this after I left Manchester for my new job in Seattle, welcome to the legacy repository. You were supposed to inherit a clean, well-documented system, but management didn't provide the leeway required to refactor the ancient modules properly.
You needn't have worried about the missing unit tests, because I didn't write any for the authentication flow either. Instead, I relied on a quick-and-dirty stopgap solution that somehow survived three major releases without crashing catastrophically.
You ought to have known that the database connection strings are hard-coded in three different places. I could have fixed them nicely, but the deadline was looming and panic set in after the third cup of black coffee.
Watch out for the payment module. It is a brittle piece of spaghetti code that is bound to break if you look at it the wrong way. I was supposed to rewrite it from scratch last quarter, but we had too many urgent feature requests instead.
Be careful with the reporting service because it has accumulated a ridiculous amount of cruft over the years. That temporary fix we added in 2022 is still running in production, acting as a duct tape holding the entire dashboard together.
Taylor tried to warn me about letting this technical debt pile up, but I ignored the advice. Now the interest on debt is enormous, and this kludge is definitely going to come back to bite whoever touches it next.
If you need to scale out the system, don't even look at vertical scaling alternatives considered by the previous team. We didn't need to add horizontal scaling yet, but management insisted on signing off on it anyway.
Despite all the chaotic architecture, hidden dead code, and forgotten band-aid fixes scattered across the repository, three parts of this system are genuinely beautiful and should never be touched: the logging middleware, the caching layer, and Olivia's custom routing engine.
Read again and choose the right answer
What did Tyler inherit according to the letter?
- A clean and perfectly documented system
- A legacy repository with hard-coded values and missing tests
- A brand new microservices architecture
What does the author say about the authentication flow?
- It has complete test coverage
- It was written from scratch last quarter
- It relies on a quick-and-dirty stopgap solution without tests
What is true about the payment module?
- It is brittle spaghetti code that is bound to break
- It was rewritten last month by Taylor
- It uses advanced horizontal scaling
Which parts of the system should never be touched?
- The payment module, the database, and the login page
- The logging middleware, the caching layer, and Olivia's routing engine
- The reporting service and the duct tape fixes
