Six Months on the Night Desk

Hello everyone, and welcome back to my logistics blog! Today marks my six-month anniversary working the night shift for Apex Freight Solutions out of Dallas. When I first started this remote job, I wondered if I would survive the strange hours. Before this role, I used to sleep like a normal person, waking up with the sun and resting all night long.

Adjusting to the graveyard shift was definitely a challenge. I would drink three cups of coffee just to stay awake during those quiet hours between midnight and four in the morning. At first, every single emergency line ring gave me a small panic attack. I wasn't used to handling a sudden breakdown at night while the rest of the world was fast asleep.

Working across different time zones means dealing with a massive time zone gap. Our dedicated customers expect 24/7 after-hours support, so our team has to stay sharp. I used to hate the silence of my apartment at 2 a.m., but now I appreciate the focus it gives me when managing spot freight and tracking drivers across the country.

One of the hardest parts was fixing my sleep schedule. I had to learn how to block out the daytime sunlight completely so my body could rest. My neighbors still think I'm a vampire because I take my morning walk right when they are heading to their offices. But honestly, I've finally got used to the rhythm of this lifestyle.

People always ask me how I deal with the isolation of working remotely through the night. They assume it is lonely and boring. But they forget about the unexpected 3 a.m. calls that turn into great conversations with veteran drivers parked at truck stops in Ohio or Arizona.

Logistics is not just about moving steel and boxes; it is about people. I often check the detention clock on our tracking software and coordinate with the day team to make sure our drivers are not stuck too long at a shipper facility.

Sometimes, drivers send me photos of their routes when they finish a long haul. They share pictures of empty highways under a canopy of bright stars or quiet weigh stations waiting for the morning rush. Seeing those images reminds me that we are part of something huge moving across America.

That is actually my favorite part of the job. Watching American sunrises through the lenses of our drivers' cameras makes every single sleepless night worth it. If you are thinking about joining the night dispatch team, don't be afraid. You will get used to it faster than you think!
