Role-play: Discussing a New Diabetes Diagnosis
Work in pairs. One student is a diabetes nurse at a clinic in London, and the other is a patient who was newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes three weeks ago. Discuss how the patient is getting used to the lifestyle changes.
• Ask the patient how they feel about coming to terms with the diagnosis.
• Discuss any challenges with sticking to the new meal plan and checking blood sugar.
• Talk about past habits that the patient had to give up.
• Offer encouragement and suggest joining a local support group.
Email to a Patient Following Up on a Diagnosis
Write an email (40–120 words) from a clinician at Boston General Hospital to a patient who was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, asking how they are adjusting to their new daily routine.
• Ask how the patient is getting used to checking blood sugar with the new glucose meter.
• Encourage them to share any setbacks regarding their meal plan.
• Remind them about the upcoming education program at the hospital.
