Debating Growth vs. Consolidation
Work with a partner. You are regional managers in Chicago or Boston. Debate whether your company should pursue aggressive expansion through acquisitions or focus on consolidating current operations.
• Weigh the risks of overextending your cash reserves versus missing market opportunities.
• Use contrast linkers (although, whereas, despite) to compare your views.
• Discuss if a bolt-on acquisition in Seattle is a sensible strategic option right now.
• Propose a 100-day plan to either expand market penetration or retrench.
Email to the Board on Expansion
Write an email (60-100 words) to the board of directors in New York. Explain whether the company should hold back on its growth strategy or proceed with a bold move, using at least two contrast linkers.
• Start with a polite greeting and clearly state the purpose of your email.
• Use words like 'diversification', 'cash reserves', and 'despite' in your arguments.
• Conclude with a clear recommendation for the strategic option you prefer.
