A Difficult Decision for Our Future
Dear Team,
Writing this open letter is by far the hardest task I have ever faced in my career. Yesterday, our board approved a painful workforce reduction affecting nearly twenty percent of our Austin headquarters. This decision stems from a severe revenue shortfall and changing market conditions.
We explored every strategic hedge available before reaching this conclusion. We tried to consolidate functions across departments, but in view of current economic pressures, our overhead costs remain unsustainable. We should have acted on these structural inefficiencies much earlier instead of hoping for a market rebound.
To those colleagues who are affected, I want to state clearly that you deserved far better. Our HR team has prepared comprehensive severance terms and robust outplacement support to cushion the blow as much as possible during this difficult transition period.
Admittedly, we might have managed the consultation period with far greater empathy and transparency. You could at least have been informed before the rumours started circulating in local business circles. I take full responsibility for these communication failures.
Looking ahead, we must restructure our talent framework to align with our core competencies. The remaining teams will operate under a simplified matrix structure, removing redundant layers of management. We cannot continue business as usual.
Naturally, morale across the organisation has slumped, and survivor syndrome is already evident in many departments. Management must now work tirelessly to restore trust and rebuild psychological safety across all remaining teams.
As part of my personal accountability, I have informed the board that I am reducing my own salary to zero for the remainder of the fiscal year. You might argue that this gesture is nowhere near enough to offset our financial losses, and you would be entirely right.
Nevertheless, I wanted to make it clear that leadership shares the burden during this crisis. We owe it to every single employee who built this company to navigate this storm with absolute integrity and honesty.
We will host a company-wide town hall tomorrow at ten o'clock to address all your questions regarding exit packages, garden leave, and redeployment opportunities. I invite every one of you to join us.
Sincerely,
Olivia, CEO
