Letter Links

Find the secret English word. Guess any word — shorter or longer: the colours, links and rounded sides show which letters are in it and in what order.

How to play
  • Type any English word of 3–10 letters and press Enter — the secret word's length is hidden.
  • in the word, in the right order · in the word, out of order · not in it
  • A link joins letters that stand side by side in the word; a rounded side: its first or last letter, in its place.

How to play

The secret word is a common English word — and you don't know how long it is: that is part of the puzzle. Type any English word of 3 to 10 letters and press Enter. Any length will do: a short word tests a few letters, a long one tests many at once. The word must be a real English word from the game's list. Guess as many times as you like — the fewer guesses, the better.

The colours

Each letter of your guess gets a colour. Green: the letter is in the secret word, and the green letters come in the same order as in the word (not always in the same places). Yellow: the letter is in the word too, but out of that order — it stands earlier or later. Grey: the letter is not in the word — or the word has fewer of it: if the word has one A and your guess has two, one of them is grey. The keyboard keeps each letter's best colour.

Links and rounded sides

A short bar between two green letters — a link — means they stand right next to each other in the secret word. Green letters with no link between them have other letters in between. A rounded left side appears only when the first letter of your guess is also the first letter of the secret word — the right letter in the right place. A rounded right side works the same way for the last letter. If the word starts with G but your guess has G in the middle, that G is green, but not rounded. Join the links from the rounded left side to the rounded right side, and you have the word.

Hints and the end

Stuck? Press "Hint": the word's letters appear on top one by one, from the first ("Starts with G A …") — never the whole word. Hints count in your result. "Give up" (press it twice) shows the word at once. At the end you see the word with its Russian and Romanian translation; with a free account you can save it to My words. "Share the result" shares the colours of your guesses, not the words — so it never gives the answer away.

An example: the secret word is GARDEN

card

CARD. C is grey: there is no C in the word. A, R and D are green and linked: the word has A, R and D in this order, right next to each other.

danger

DANGER. G and R are green: the word has G, and R later — with no link, so other letters stand between them. G is not rounded, although the word starts with G: in DANGER it is not the first letter. D, A, N and E are in the word, but not in this order.

open

OPEN. O and P are grey. E and N are green and linked, and N has a rounded right side: the word ends with N, just like OPEN — so it ends in EN.

garage

GARAGE. G, A, R green and linked from the rounded side: the word starts with GAR. The second A and G are grey: the word has only one A and one G. E is green: it comes after R, but not right after it.

garden

GARDEN. All green and linked from the first letter to the last: found!
