Guess the phrase

Find the secret English expression — an idiom or a saying like "break the ice". The colours show which letters are in it, and where.

How to play
  • Type a phrase that fits the boxes — each word a real English word — and press Enter.
  • right place · in this word, another place · in another word · not in the phrase
  • Stuck? Hint shows the meaning first, then letters.

How to play

The secret phrase is a common English expression: an idiom, a saying or a fixed phrase people really use, from everyday English to C1. The boxes show how many words it has and how many letters each word has. Type a phrase that fits the boxes and press Enter — every word must be a real English word, but the guess doesn't have to be a real expression. Guess as many times as you like.

The colours

Green: the right letter in the right place. Yellow: the letter is in this word, but in another place. Purple: the letter is in the phrase, but in another word. Grey: the letter is not in the phrase — or the phrase has fewer of it than your guess. The keyboard keeps each letter's best colour.

Hints

Stuck? Press "Hint". The first hint shows what the phrase means. The second fills in the first letter of each word, the third one more letter of each word, and the fourth shows the whole phrase. Hints count in your result.

The end

You see the phrase with its meaning, an example and its Russian and Romanian translation. "Share the result" shares the colours of your guesses, not the words — so it never gives the answer away. "Next phrase" gives you another one; play as many as you like.
